According to reports, the Japan National Harbor Workers Union Federation and the All Japan Dockworkers and Transport Workers Union recently organized a strike. The strike is primarily due to employers refusing the union’s demand for a wage increase of 30,000 yen (approximately $210) or a 10% monthly salary raise, as well as raising the starting salary to 220,000 yen ($1,545) per month.
It has been reported that all ports in Japan held a 24-hour strike on April 20 and will conduct a 48-hour strike from April 26 to 27.
Due to the strike, loading operations have halted at ports across Japan.
Previously, Japanese workers held similar strikes on March 30 and April 13, but they had limited impact as they occurred on Sundays.
There are reports that the employers, represented by the Japan Port Transport Association, plan to continue negotiations with the union to minimize the impact of the strikes.
