The U.S. is one of Canada’s largest export markets for honey, and the U.S. tariff policies have increased costs for Canadian beekeepers, who are now actively seeking buyers in other regions.
In British Columbia, a family-run beekeeping business that has operated for nearly 30 years and has hundreds of retail locations in North America is currently facing difficulties. The company revealed that the U.S. threat of imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian agricultural products has made an already slim-margin industry even more challenging. If the tariffs are implemented, they will be forced to raise product prices to avoid losses.
Jason Griffin, Sales Manager at a Canadian beekeeping company, stated: “We are a small company, and the tariffs are paid by us upfront. If the tariff increases by 25% on a bottle of honey, we will have to raise our prices, possibly close to 30% to cover costs. U.S. consumers may face an increase of $3 to $4 per bottle. We have invested a lot of time and effort in the U.S. market and tried to build our retail network, but now everything is on hold, and we don’t know what the future holds.”
Beekeeping is an important agricultural industry in Canada, with the majority of queen bees imported from the U.S. Beekeepers are concerned that the tariff war and Canada’s countermeasures could result in high taxes on future imports of queen bees as well. According to the latest data from the Canadian Honey Council, Canada produces about 34 million kilograms of honey annually, with roughly half of it exported, and the U.S. market accounts for 80% to 90% of that export share. Due to the increasing uncertainty from tariffs, beekeepers are actively exploring markets outside of the U.S.
Jason Griffin added: “Our plan is to breed our own queens while looking for other export countries for our products. We have found that buyers from other Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea, as well as Middle Eastern countries, are also interested in our products.”
