ZIM Container Ship M.V. MISSISSIPPI Suffers Serious Container Stack Collapse at Port of LA, Nearly 70 Containers Fall Overboard

In the early hours of September 10th, Beijing time, a serious container stack collapse accident occurred aboard the large ZIM container ship M.V. MISSISSIPPI during unloading operations at the Port of Los Angeles. The incident resulted in nearly 70 containers falling into the sea, with some dropped containers striking a clean air barge moored alongside, posing an immediate and serious threat to port operational safety.

Following the accident, operations at Berth G in the Port of Los Angeles were urgently suspended. The U.S. Coast Guard quickly established a safety zone around the incident area and issued navigation warnings. The port has led the formation of a unified command involving multiple government agencies and stakeholders, dispatching vessels and aircraft to assess the situation and fully engage in rescue and safety containment efforts.

This incident is expected to require several days or even longer for salvage and investigation operations, which will likely lead to significant schedule delays for the M.V. MISSISSIPPI. The vessel serves on ZIM’s US West Coast e-commerce express service (ZEX) and had previously departed from the Port of Yantian, Shenzhen. Therefore, shippers and freight forwarders with cargo on this vessel are advised to promptly contact the shipping company to ascertain specific details regarding cargo damage and subsequent schedule adjustments.
